About the Class
This class combines plenty of repetition and movement with breath to ready the muscles to hold Hatha yoga asanas for a period of time. Each asana is adapted to individual ability for optimum benefit. In addition, the Kundalini pranayama, or breathing techniques, warm the body from the inside, promoting glandular health and energizing the internal organs of the body for healthy functioning.
About the Instructor
It is said that “yoga comes to you” at the right time. It came to me about 10 years ago, too exhausted to enjoy my young kids. Vitamins didn't work, and neither did energy drinks. But yoga did, and as I practiced, I wanted more. I enrolled in local classes at the Fitness Resources Associates in MA, and eventually worked my way through to RYT standing in Hatha Yoga, with a focus on Viniyoga, as originally taught by Krishnamacharya, continued by his son Desikachar, and furthered by Gary Kraftsow, founder of the American Viniyoga Institute. Lots of movement and repetition ready the body for yoga asanas adapted to the individual. I combined Kundalini breathing techniques to the practice and have found an energizing yoga that I look forward to each morning. Even my two kids, Rana and Sanjana enjoy the practice with me, now. I'm still trying to convince my husband…but I'm sure yoga will come to him, too.
Overview of Viniyoga
Viniyoga was started by Sri. T. Krishnamacharya in the 1970's. Viniyoga places great importance on the breath; in fact, each movement is led by the breath. Viniyoga also emphasizes repetitive motions which prepare the muscles to comfortably hold an asana for the desired length of time.
Viniyoga has a relaxed approach to asanas which allow the practitioner, for example, to bend the knees, but maintain spinal alignment. It is less vigorous than Ashtanga or Power yoga, and might even be viewed as therapeutic in nature.
